A Promise Fulfilled: MD Anderson at Cooper Brings Advanced Cancer Care to Cape May County
July 2 marked a powerful step forward for patients and families in Cape May and Atlantic counties: Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional is now an officially approved radiation oncology site of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.
The site received approval from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the nation’s leading cancer centers, which partnered with Cooper starting in 2013. This approval broadens the availability of advanced cancer care options for the residents of Cape May and Atlantic counties.
With this designation, patients in the Jersey Shore region now have access to advanced radiation therapy close to home, delivered by a specialized team and in adherence with MD Anderson’s world-class treatment protocols.
“When we announced that Cape Regional was joining Cooper University Health Care, we made a promise to Jersey Shore communities that we would bring advanced, specialty care to the region,” said George E. Norcross III, chairman of the Board of Trustees, Cooper University Health Care. “Today’s announcement is the first of many steps toward fulfilling that promise.”
“This designation represents a transformation in the way cancer care is delivered in this region,” added Christine Winn, PhD, MHA, FACHE, senior vice president and chief regional officer at Cooper. “It brings MD Anderson’s expertise to the residents and visitors of Cape May and Atlantic counties.”
Why It Matters
Each year, 1 in 190 residents in Cape May County receives a cancer diagnosis. Until now, many families had to travel far from home to receive the care they needed. Now, with MD Anderson at Cooper Radiation Oncology in Cape May Court House, patients can access advanced treatment with the support of family, friends, and their local community by their side.
“Having advanced cancer care close to home is important for patients and their families, and we are confident that having MD Anderson at Cooper Radiation Oncology in Cape May County will bring comfort and convenience for patients in local shore communities,” said Kevin O’Dowd, JD, co-CEO of Cooper University Health Care.
“We are happy to be extending the MD Anderson at Cooper model of evidenced-based care, compassionate multidisciplinary teamwork, and innovation to more patients in Cape May and Atlantic counties,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper University Health Care.
