Celebrating Growth: Cooper Cape Regional Unveils Expanded Emergency and Radiology Departments

Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional is thrilled to announce the official opening of the newly renovated and expanded Emergency and Radiology Departments! On January 20th, the Cooper Cape Regional team celebrated this milestone with a staff ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This accomplishment represents years of hard work and dedication. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, which helped us raise $7.5 million for the project, Cooper Cape Regional is now better equipped than ever to deliver top-tier care to Cape May County. A special thanks goes to the Larry L. Luing Family Foundation for jumpstarting the expansion campaign with a generous $3 million donation, securing naming rights for the Emergency Department in honor of the late Larry L. Luing, a beloved longtime visitor of the Jersey Shore.
The expansion was designed to meet the growing needs of our community. The Emergency Department now serves more than 37,000 patients each year, and this new space, along with state-of-the-art equipment, will ensure we continue to meet the increasing demand for care.
With the relocation of surgery services to a new facility on the hospital campus, the former surgery space was renovated to accommodate the new Radiology Department. While the hospital’s exterior remains unchanged, the internal improvements are truly transformative.
Key features of the expansion include the addition of the nine new Emergency Department beds. This expansion brings the total Emergency Department bed count to 40, ensuring that we can effectively accommodate fluctuating patient volumes throughout the year.
As patients enter the Emergency Department, they’ll find an updated waiting area and the addition of a second triage room. Jackie Noll, Emergency Department Nursing Director, shared exciting details about these improvements. “When we welcome and triage patients, we assess their needs and ensure they’re directed to the appropriate care path. If there’s a wait, we can start necessary tests—like lab work or x-rays—so when they see the provider, their results are already available,” Jackie explained.
Inside the new Emergency Department suite, Jackie highlighted the flexible design of the new treatment bays, each equipped with cardiac monitoring and essential headwall features to accommodate various levels of acuity, referring to the severity of a patient’s condition and how urgently they need care. The suite also includes a clinical workstation for providers, nurses, and technicians to document and manage patient care using our new EPIC system, implemented in October 2024. Additionally, four mobile workstations enable clinicians to document information at the patient’s bedside, and a pneumatic tube system swiftly transports samples to the laboratory for testing.
One of the most exciting features of the Emergency Department is the addition of four negative pressure rooms, designed to isolate patients with contagious conditions. Jackie explained, “What’s truly unique about this space is that the entire nine bed suite can become negative pressure,” effectively containing germs and preventing them from spreading.
In line with our commitment to efficiency and quality care, the new layout also improves access to essential radiology services. Adjacent to the Emergency Department is a satellite Radiology Department that houses state-of-the-art X-ray, ultrasound, and CT equipment. These modalities are dedicated exclusively to our ED patients, ensuring rapid diagnostic services while keeping inpatient and outpatient care separate.
This expansion is a true reflection of our commitment to providing exceptional care to our community. We are thrilled about these enhancements and can’t wait to continue serving the healthcare needs of Cape May County with the best facilities and technology available.
