Cooper Renames Trauma Admitting Area in Honor of Renowned Trauma Surgeon Steven E. Ross, MD
On January 31, 2017, Cooper University Hospital renamed its Trauma Admitting Area in honor of renowned trauma surgeon Steven E. Ross, MD, longtime leader of the Cooper Trauma Center.
As part of a surprise ceremony, George E. Norcross, III, Chairman, Cooper University Health Care, unveiled a new sign and commemorative plaque designating the Trauma Admitting Area as the new Steven E. Ross Trauma Admitting Area.
“Naming the Trauma Admitting Area in honor of Dr. Ross is a perfect tribute to his contribution to Cooper’s reputation for excellence in trauma,” said Norcross. “His name will forever remain a part of the trauma department that he helped to build.”
The ceremony and celebration of Dr. Ross’s achievements were hosted by The Cooper Foundation, which coordinated a secret fundraising mission that honored Ross and raised more than $125,000 to equip the Trauma Admitting Area with new portable X-ray technology.
“An icon at Cooper and beyond, Dr. Ross has dedicated his career to making the Cooper Trauma Center the best it can be and always puts his patients and their families first.” said Susan Bass Levin, President and CEO, The Cooper Foundation. “Everyone knows that the only spotlights Dr. Ross likes are the ones in the operating room, which is why this secret mission has been so much fun.”
Ross joined Cooper in 1984 and served as the Trauma Division Head from 1988 through 2015. During that time, Cooper’s Trauma Center achieved national recognition for clinical care, education, and clinical research. The Cooper Trauma Center is the only Level I trauma center in South Jersey.
Ross now serves as Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Surgical Residency Program Director, and Professor of Surgery at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.
“Cooper’s reputation in the region for providing exceptional trauma care is largely due to the work of Dr. Ross,” said Adrienne Kirby, President and CEO of Cooper University Health Care. “He has made Cooper a better hospital by consistently and passionately focusing on providing the best possible care to our patients and their families. He is an asset to our organization.”
Anthony Mazzarelli, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Cooper University Health Care said: “Dr. Ross has trained hundreds of physicians over the years, including me. Those of us that have learned under him share a bond – we have studied under someone that has not only shaped Cooper, but also helped design and improve the entire trauma system in New Jersey.”
