Groundbreaking slated for Camden school

CAMDEN — A groundbreaking ceremony will be held next month for Camden’s first “renaissance” school.

Gov. Chris Christie is expected to attend the March 5 event, which formally launches construction of Kipp Cooper Norcross Academy at Lanning Square. The privately run, publicly financed school will rise at Broadway and 5th Street.

The 11 a.m. ceremony is to take place at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in the 400 block of South Broadway.

The academy is a partnership of the Kipp chain of charter schools, as well as the Cooper Foundation and the Norcross foundations affiliated with Cooper Health System and the Norcross family.

It is expected to open with kindergarten classes in the fall.
