The Hirsch family has been supporting Cooper University Health Care and The Cooper Foundation for over 20 years. It all started in the 1990’s when Selma Hirsch was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery at Cooper.

Michael Hirsch says the care that Cooper provided his mother is what made him, his Dad, Martin Hirsch, and brother, Alan Hirsch, want to give back.

“We were so grateful for the extraordinary care, compassion and attentiveness that was demonstrated from the surgeon to the nursing staff, from ICU to the floor nurses, that we wanted to show our appreciation,” explained Michael, of Cherry Hill, N.J.

After marrying Selma, Martin left his job at the post office to join his father-in-law’s business around 1940. At that time, there were just three employees.

Martin built the business into a manufacturing entity, and as electrical appliances became popular, expanded into making electric lamps and later electric lighting fixtures

After growing up in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Michael and Alan began to work for the four generation business, and eventually became executives and owners. The business was sold in 2005.

Michael credits his father with paving the way for him and his brother.

Martin, who recently passed away, was a firm believer in giving back to the community. Now, Michael and Alan are carrying on in their father’s footsteps.

“It is important to me. Dad always supported local charities and non-profits,” said Michael. “We learned that as we started to formulate our own careers, if we were fortunate enough to have the means, then we should help those entities that were deserving of our financial assistance. Cooper is a worthy recipient.”

As a member of The Cooper Foundation Board, Michael continues to support the community and hopes to bring Cooper to a new and exciting level.

“By donating to Cooper, we can help ensure that it continues to grow and serve our community as one of the top health care systems in the region,” said Michael.
