Get to know Maya in her own words:
- What drew you to the Foundation initially?
Growing up in South Jersey, I spent a lot of time volunteering in Camden, which gave me a deep sense of fulfillment knowing I was making a difference close to home. I’ve always aspired to work in the nonprofit sector, but being part of an organization rooted in the South Jersey community feels especially meaningful. The passion and dedication everyone here has for philanthropy and their roles is truly energizing.
- What is most rewarding about working at the Foundation for you?
I’ve been with the Cooper Foundation for a little over 2 months and what’s most rewarding for me is the incredible people I work with at The Cooper Foundation. Their passion and dedication to making a difference inspire me every day. It’s also deeply fulfilling to contribute to the growth and progress of Camden—a community I’ve always cared about—knowing that our collective efforts are helping to create lasting change.
- What skills or lessons have you gained since your start here that will help you with your job/life going forward?
Aside from the various marketing skills I have gained since my start at The Cooper Foundation, I have learned how important it is to communicate The Foundation’s mission effectively and authentically. Another major skill I have learned is juggling multiple projects at once while staying organized. These are skills that I know will serve me well in both my professional and personal life.
- Who or what inspires you?
My parents are my biggest inspiration. Their unwavering support for the people they love and their hardworking nature have always been guiding principles in my life. They were some of my biggest supporters and encouragers when I decided to start working at The Cooper Foundation, constantly pushing me to be the best version of myself. Their belief in me and their example of dedication and care inspires me every day.
- Describe your perfect day off.
Above all, I love spending time with my friends and family when I’m not working. My ideal day off would involve being outdoors, especially in the sunshine, reading, getting some exercise, enjoying a delicious meal, shopping, and seeing live music — all while having my loved ones with me to share the experience.
As we conclude this week’s Foundation Faces feature on Maya Olimpio, her story is a testament to the impact of hard work, heartfelt dedication, and a genuine passion for community. Through her creativity and commitment to sharing The Cooper Foundation’s mission, Maya continues to play a vital role in driving meaningful change and supporting the Camden community she holds so dear.
