Honoring a Life Well Lived: The Story Behind Luanne’s Legacy Links

When someone you love deeply is taken too soon, the question becomes: How do you keep their spirit alive? For those who knew and loved Luanne Funari, the answer was simple—golf.
Luanne was more than just an avid golfer—she was a force on the course. With over 20 club championships to her name, golf was not just a hobby; it was her passion, her therapy, and ultimately, her lifeline during her battle with terminal cancer. Even while facing the harshest realities of her illness, Luanne found strength, community, and joy on the green.
So, when she passed, it felt only natural to honor her through the sport that gave her so much life. That’s how Luanne’s Legacy Links: Teeing Off Against Breast Cancer was born: a golf tournament created by family and friends to remember her, celebrate her, and continue the good she brought into the world.
The first year of the event was a success. With the help of loved ones, donated signage, and an outpouring of support, what began as a way to process grief turned into a full-blown tournament. “It was just so beautiful,” Nicole Donahue, niece of Luanne, said. “Seeing the whole thing come together was the best moment for me.” Every detail, from the personalized signs to the shared stories, made it a day filled with laughter, remembrance, and meaning.
The event isn’t just about golf—it’s about giving back, just as Luanne always did. A brilliant businesswoman, charitable leader, and devoted family member, she left behind a meaningful legacy. Through the tournament, funds are raised for the Pink Roses Teal Magnolias Fund at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, a place Luanne herself supported and believed in. The organizers also hope to extend donations directly to local families fighting cancer—real people in the community, just like Luanne.
In its second year, Luanne’s Legacy Links is evolving. It’s gaining momentum, gaining official 501(c)(3) status, and hoping to welcome new faces who may not have known Luanne personally but are inspired by her story. It’s not just a day of golf—it’s a celebration of life, generosity, and perseverance.
Participants enjoy a full day of golf, great food, drinks, music, and heartfelt connection—all while supporting a powerful cause.
Luanne lived with intention. She worked hard, traveled often, danced freely, and was always present in the moment. Even as cancer loomed, she never stopped celebrating life. And now, through this tournament, her spirit continues to inspire others to do the same.
So, if you’re looking to make a difference, swing a club, and spend a day doing something that truly matters—get involved with Luanne’s Legacy Links.
