Arthur Caplan, PhD, is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Chair, and Director, Division of Medical Ethics, NYU Langone Medical Center.

Nationally-renowned bioethicist Arthur Caplan, PhD, will present “Medicine Just for You? The Promise and Perils of Personalized Medicine” to Cooper physicians, fellows, residents and students on Tuesday, March 5, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.

The presentation is part of the inaugural Berkowitz Lecture Series, which was established as a result of a significant educational gift to The Cooper Foundation from the Berkowitz Family Foundation of Merion, Pa.

Dr. Caplan is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Chair, and Director, Division of Medical Ethics, NYU Langone Medical Center. A dynamic presenter, Dr. Caplan is widely known for his thoughtful, engaging and provocative discussions.

Prior to joining NYU he was the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics. Dr. Caplan also taught at the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Center for Biomedical Ethics, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University.

Mr. Edwin Berkowitz, Chairman of the Board of JE Berkowitz, LP, has served on several academic boards, including the Advisory Board of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Bioethics, under the leadership of Dr. Caplan. On a personal level as a patient, Mr. Berkowitz has observed the importance of ethical behavior and empathy by health care professionals. He is passionate when discussing the role of medical ethics in every day care and the ethical considerations in the development of unique treatments and medical technology.

Cooper urologist Joel Marmar, MD, Professor of Surgery at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, was instrumental in securing the grant.
