Local Student Shares Love for Reading with Pediatric Patients

To say 12-year-old Rebecca Isenberg enjoys reading is an understatement.
“She has read the whole Harry Potter series nine times!” says her mom, Susan Friedler, DO, Attending Physician, General Pediatrics at the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Cooper Medical School at Rowan University.
While helping her mom sort through books for pediatric patients at Cooper, Rebecca has noticed a shortage of books suited for older children.
Both Rebecca and her sister Sidra celebrated their B’not Mitzvah on March 22 at Temple Beth Sholom of Cherry Hill. As part of her community service project for her Bat Mitzvah, Rebecca wanted to share her love for reading with patients at the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper.
“I really like to read, and I think everyone should read,” explained Rebecca, who counts The Throne of Fire, Shimmer, Twice Upon a Time and The Fault in Our Stars among her other favorites.
From October through March, Rebecca ran a book drive and collected money for new books at her school, Kellman Brown Academy in Voorhees. In total, she collected more than 100 new and gently used books for children ages 8 and up through teens at the Children’s Regional Hospital.
“I think it was an amazing idea,” Dr. Friedler said about Rebecca’s project. “She took it upon herself to develop and organize the book drive.”
