Q&A with Pink & Teal Hero: Dr. Marjan Koch

Who or what inspired you to become a doctor?
My mom was a bone marrow transplant nurse and I saw how many lives she touched. However, while in school I thought I could make more of a difference through research. I did not decide to become a doctor until I was getting my master’s degree in biomedical science. At that point, when I realized I wanted to be more involved with patients and decided to go into medicine.

What do you like most about your position at Cooper?
There are so many things that I like about my position at Cooper. As an oncologist, I feel I have a very special bond with my patients.  As an inpatient physician, I have the opportunity to meet many different people with different types of malignancy. I also have the opportunity to learn new things and challenge myself every day. The most unique part of Cooper are the people I work with. I know am part of an amazing group of people striving to improve the health of our patients.

Besides work and family, what are your passions?
I love to travel when I can. I also enjoy reading an exciting mystery novel.

Do you have a personal motto or philosophy?
To always find something good in each day, no matter how bad that day might be.

What three words best describe you?
Empathetic, Patient, Optimistic

What are you currently reading?
A mystery novel by David Baldacci. I also recently read the book “In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope,” by Dr. Rana Awdish. It’s the story of a critical care physician who finds herself in her own ICU. It’s amazing to read about her journey and is eye-opening to read about a physician who is now the patient.

Tell us something about you that people wouldn’t expect.
I speak fluent Dutch and lived in the Netherlands when I was young.

Why should people support Pink and Teal?
Pink and Teal raises money that directly supports research and program for patients to help them through their journey. It is important that our patients never feel alone. Pink and Teal demonstrates that we are all in this together.
