Where Comfort Meets Care: Supporting Children with Diabetes at Cooper

A diabetes diagnosis can feel overwhelming for a child, but the Pediatric Diabetes/Endocrinology team at Cooper understands how powerful comfort, representation, and age-appropriate education can be during this time. With support from the Cooper Cares Grant, the team is bringing meaningful, kid-friendly tools directly into the hands of young patients to make their diagnosis feel a little less scary—and a lot more empowering.

As part of this initiative, children receive items such as the Barbie Fashionistas doll with Type 1 Diabetes, storybooks written to help kids understand their condition, and interactive coloring books that break down symptoms and care in a friendly, engaging way. These resources provide emotional reassurance while also helping children build confidence as they learn to navigate life with diabetes.

For many young patients, seeing a character who shares their experience or reading a story that explains a new diagnosis in simple language can make all the difference. These items brighten clinic visits, ease anxiety, and help families feel supported every step of the way.

Thanks to generous donor support through Cooper Cares, Cooper’s Pediatric Diabetes/Endocrinology team is able to create moments of comfort, connection, and courage for the children who need it most—reminding every child that they are strong, capable, and never alone.
